Zanzibar: The Spice Island of Africa
Zanzibar is an archipelago just east of Tanzania, East Africa, also known as the spice island archipelago, owing to its long history of agriculture and export of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Surrounded by clear, turquoise Indian Ocean waters.
Over the centuries, Zanzibar has been under Portuguese, Omani and British rule. It’s thought that traders from Arabia, Persia and India began arriving in Zanzibar during the 1st Century AD by sailing across the ocean on the monsoon winds. Eventually, some Persian traders began settling in Stone Town permanently, and their influence on the architecture, cuisine and culture of Zanzibar can still be seen today.
Zanzibar is also the birthplace and childhood home of tock star Freddy Mercury.

How To Get to Zanzibar
To get to Zanzibar, you’ll need to fly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). There are not many direct international flights from many countries, so you may need to connect via a hub like Istanbul, Ethiopia, Qatar, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, or Dubai.
For most nationalities, a visa is required to enter Tanzania (Zanzibar is part of Tanzania). You can apply for a tourist visa online before your trip or obtain one on arrival at Zanzibar’s international airport. The price costs between $50-$100 depending on your nationality.
You may also get to Zanzibar by ferry service from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania mainland and takes approximately 2 hours.
